Secretary's Report

The October 10, 2011 meeting of the Austin Blair Camp No.7 Sons of Union Veterans of the Civil War was held at the Post 29 American Legion, Jackson, Michigan.

Members in attendance were Brothers: Kyle Bublitz, Bob Griggs, Henry Hawker, Bob Hoffman, Ron Lewis, Howard Lloyd, Mike Maillard, Jeff Oberdank, Ron Tyrl, Charlie Waters Jr. and guest Roger Manning.

Camp Commander Oberdank welcomed Mr. Roger Manning. The Secretary's report was motioned accepted as published in the Courier by Brother Waters and seconded by Brother Lloyd, motion passed. The Treasurer's Report was motioned accepted as presented and published in the Courier by Brother Hoffman and seconded by Brother Griggs, motion passed.

Patriotic Instructor

1. Brother Griggs informed the Camp of the reason for the light blue trousers issued to union troops was for cost. It required less dye than the navy blue.
2. Discussion on Battery A, First Michigan Artillery Loomis Battery's "Old Sam" the Artillery horse was held and the horse's internment in Oak Grove Cemetery in Coldwater.

Election Committee

1. Brother Griggs gave the election committee's recommendations for Camp Officers for the 2012 year. Commander: Henry Hawker, Senior Vice Commander: Howard Lloyd, Junior Vice Commander: Daniel Watkins, Treasurer: Mike Maillard, Secretary: Ron Tyrl, Council: Jeff Oberdank, Bob Hoffman, Ron Lewis. Appointed positions members agreed to hold: Color Guard: Brock Lloyd, Chaplain: Chris Cox, Patriotic Instructor: Mark Heath, Graves Registration: Charles Waters III, Quartermaster: Charles Waters Jr., Historian: Mike Maillard, Signals: Bob Griggs. After nominations requested from the floor, Brother Hoffman motioned to accept the Election Committee's recommendations and seconded by Brother Lewis, motion passed.

Signals

1. Brother Griggs has up-dated the Camp's website up to October's activities, the Michigan Regimental Flags page is completed, "Michigan My Michigan" 1862 lyrics has been added and Brother Griggs requested up-coming events be forwarded to him for posting on the website for the remainder of 2011 and for the up-coming 2012 year.
2. Brother Griggs forwarded a National SUVCW "survey" and had copies for meeting attendees.

Membership

1. Invitations will be sent to two individuals interested in our Camp from the Waterloo event and about a dozen from the Muster for the November meeting.

Communications

1. The Camp received the Jackson County Veterans Council 2012 dues request and Treasurer Maillard issued a $5 check.
2. The Jackson County Veterans Council also invited our camp to the Friday, November 11th Veteran's Day program at the "Defense of the Flag" monument at 10:30 for the 11:00 program. Discussion on the fact that this will be on the 11th hour, 11th day, 11th month of the 11th year this 2011 year.
3. The Camp has been invited to the Cascade's Muster appreciation dinner, Sunday, October 30th, social hour at 4, dinner at 5pm.

Old Business

1. Brother Watkins and Hawker are continuing their contacts with Sons of Confederate Camp's to partner with in recognition of the Sesquicentennial.

New Business

1. Commander Oberdank motioned to split the $100 money donation to the Camp with the Auxiliary for our participation at the Albion Corn Fest program, seconded by Brother Griggs, motion passed.
2. The Auxiliary will see if the Christmas party at the Sandstone Church can be held on December 11th.

For the Good of the Order

A review of up-coming events was done:
1. Nov. 5, Saturday, The Detroit Veteran's Day parade, at Noon, down Woodward Avenue and Fort Wayne will be available again for overnight accommodations.
2. November 6, Sunday, Veterans Day "Massing of the Colors" in Lansing at the Michigan Museum at 2:00pm.
3. November 11, Friday, Veterans Day at the Defense of the Flag monument in Jackson staging at 10:30.
4. November 11, Friday, Mason Veterans Day Parade staging at 2pm at the Fair Grounds.
5. "In Memory of" veteran's stone placed in Livingston County dedication June 23, 2012. More details as the day approaches.
6. Brother Maillard closed the meeting with an article on a tin type picture found recently of Robert E. Lee that was placed up for bid and there was an offer of tens of thousands of dollars until it was determined it was a reproduction. The hazards of antiquing.

Commander Oberdank proceeded to close the meeting at 7:55pm and our next camp meeting is scheduled for November 14, 2011, to be held at Post 29 American Legion, Jackson, Michigan.
